Light duty grating is selected where the verified load and support span allow a smaller bearing-bar section, a more open spacing or both. The aim is not simply to choose the thinnest panel: it is to remove unnecessary steel while keeping the required strength, deflection, opening safety and handling performance.
A light-duty specification begins with the actual duty: pedestrian traffic, occasional maintenance access or another defined light-load condition. The clear support span, load type, allowable deflection and opening-size rule are checked together before a smaller section or wider pitch is proposed.
If concentrated loads, trolley wheels, forklifts or vehicles enter the brief, the decision moves out of the light-duty range and into a dedicated load review.
