What is welded steel grating?

Welded steel grating joins cross bars to load-bearing flat bars at their intersections to form a rigid, one-piece panel. The bearing bars carry load in their span direction, while the welded intersections maintain the grid and panel integrity. Openings, edge banding and overall dimensions are produced to the approved drawing.

Production method is assigned after drawing review. Bar section, grid pattern, panel geometry, quantity, fabrication details and inspection requirements determine whether panels run on an automated press-welding line, are completed by manual fabrication, or use both routes within one project.

Because welding suits both carbon steel and stainless steel and accepts banding, cut-outs, toe plates and secondary fabrication, welded grating is the default choice for industrial platforms, walkways, stair treads and trench covers worldwide.

Automated press welding forms repeatable standard grids at high production volume. Manual welding and fabrication are used for heavy sections, non-standard bar arrangements, irregular geometry, banding, toe plates and reinforcement around cut-outs. The route is selected according to the approved drawing, bar section, quantity and inspection requirements — not by a simple strong-versus-weak comparison.

  • Bearing bars and cross bars are checked against mill test certificates before cutting.
  • Standard panels are generally press-welded on automated lines; irregular layouts and sections outside the selected line setup are completed through qualified manual fabrication.
  • Cut-outs, banding, toe plates, lifting holes and clip positions follow the layout drawings.
  • Each panel is inspected for bar size and spacing, weld points, flatness and overall dimensions against the drawing.
  • Tall, thin bearing bars (for example 3 mm thick above 50 mm depth) are reviewed for galvanizing distortion risk before production.

What is the difference between machine-welded and manually welded grating?
Machine press welding forms repeatable standard grids efficiently for volume orders. Manual welding and fabrication provide flexibility for irregular geometry, non-standard bar arrangements, banding, toe plates and reinforcement around cut-outs. The production route does not determine load capacity by itself; bearing bar size, spacing, span, load type and support conditions still govern the design.
What does 19-W-4 mean?
In imperial notation, 19-W-4 means bearing bars at 19-space pitch (about 1-3/16″ centers), W for welded construction, and cross bars at 4″ centers. The common metric equivalent is 30 mm bearing bar spacing with 100 mm cross bar spacing — our most common platform specification.
Which bearing bar spacing should I choose?
30 mm spacing is the most common for industrial platforms and walkways. The final specification depends on your span, load type and any opening-size safety requirements — confirm these before ordering.
Can you fabricate welded grating to my drawings?
Yes. Send layout drawings with panel sizes, span direction, cut-outs and banding requirements. Our CAD technicians detail each panel with project numbering for site installation.
What is the minimum order quantity?
For standard carbon steel specifications the minimum order is typically 10–20 m². Custom specifications and stainless steel start around 50 m² because of material and setup requirements — send your list and we will confirm what applies.
What is the production lead time?
Typical production lead time is 15–25 days after specification confirmation, depending on quantity and fabrication complexity. Samples of standard specifications usually take 3–7 days.
What is the maximum panel size you can weld?
Press-welded panels run up to about 6100 mm in the bearing bar direction and 1000–1200 mm wide, and are kept within a 70–100 kg handling limit. Larger areas are supplied as split panels numbered to your layout.
