Serrated Steel Grating

Serrated steel grating uses bearing bars with a toothed top edge to add traction where wet, oily, snowy or inclined conditions are identified. Final suitability depends on contaminants, footwear, slope and the project requirement. It is available in galvanized carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum and fabricated to your drawings.

What is serrated steel grating?

Serrated steel grating is welded bar grating whose bearing bars carry a notched, tooth-like top edge. Those edges can add traction compared with a plain flat surface, but no universal slip-resistance result is claimed: performance depends on contaminants, footwear, slope, maintenance and the project requirement.

It is specified wherever slip risk is elevated: outdoor walkways exposed to rain and snow, process plant platforms with oil or chemical films, inclined ramps, and stair tread nosings. Because the teeth remove a small amount of bar material, the effective section is slightly reduced — load capacity is confirmed against span, load type and support conditions during specification, exactly as with plain grating.

  • Serration is rolled into the bearing bar before welding; tooth profile is checked on incoming material.
  • Serrated panels are welded, cut and banded to the same drawings and tolerances as plain grating.
  • Load checks account for the reduced effective section of serrated bars at the confirmed span.
  • Galvanizing follows fabrication so teeth, welds and cut edges are fully coated.

When should I choose serrated over plain grating?
Choose serrated for outdoor, wet, oily, snowy or inclined walking surfaces and for stair treads. For dry indoor platforms, plain grating is more economical and easier to clean.
Does serration reduce load capacity?
Serration slightly reduces the effective bar section; load capacity is confirmed against span, load type and support conditions during specification — tell us your requirements and we will size the bars accordingly.
Is serrated grating more expensive?
Yes, serrated bearing bars carry a cost premium over plain bars of the same size. We help you apply serration only where slip risk justifies it.
Is serrated grating compulsory for outdoor use?
Not compulsory, but strongly recommended for outdoor walkways, ramps and stairs exposed to rain, snow or oil — and many project specifications require it there. Send your specification and we will match it.
Can serrated grating be hot-dip galvanized?
Yes. Panels are fully welded and fabricated first, then galvanized so the teeth, welds and cut edges are coated. The applicable ASTM A123/A123M, ISO 1461 or project requirements and reporting scope are agreed for the order.
What are the MOQ and lead time for serrated grating?
Standard serrated specifications start around 10–20 m²; custom sizes around 50 m². Typical lead time is 15–25 days, with samples of standard specifications in 3–7 days.
Can I mix plain and serrated grating in one project?
Yes. Many projects use serrated only on stairs, ramps and exposed edges, and plain grating elsewhere to control cost. We detail both from the same layout drawings.
