Plain vs Serrated Steel Grating: How to Choose

Plain and serrated steel grating use the same basic load-bearing structure; the visible difference is the top edge of the bearing bar. Plain grating has flat bar tops and is economical and easier to clean. Serrated grating has a toothed top edge intended to add traction where rain, oil, mud, light ice or slope increases slip risk. No universal slip-resistance result is claimed: final suitability depends on contaminants, footwear, slope, maintenance and the project requirement. Serration normally carries a price premium and takes slightly more effort to clean. Load capacity is confirmed against the same span, load and support inputs for both surfaces.
What actually differs between the two
Both versions use the same basic bearing bars, cross bars and fabrication route. Serration forms teeth in the top edge of each bearing bar to provide additional edges at the walking surface. Bar size, spacing, span capacity and finish options are specified separately, so the surface decision addresses operating conditions and project requirements rather than increasing structural strength.

Where each surface belongs
- Serrated: outdoor walkways and platforms, stair treads, ramps, marine and offshore areas, wastewater plants, any oily or washdown zone
- Plain: dry indoor platforms, mezzanine flooring, shelving decks, covers rarely walked on, architectural features
- Mixed designs: serrated on circulation routes and stairs, plain on equipment zones — a common way to control budget
- Cold regions: serrated is commonly specified wherever snow and ice are expected
Standards and project specifications
Many owner and EPC specifications mandate serrated surfaces for outdoor walkways and stair treads, and marine or offshore specifications commonly require them. Whether serration is mandatory for your project is set by your project specification and local safety rules — confirm before ordering, because retrofitting anti-slip strips onto plain grating costs more than specifying serrated at the start.
How to specify the surface
State serrated or plain as a separate line in the specification — for example: welded steel grating, bearing bar 32 × 5 mm, 30 × 100 mm, serrated surface, hot-dip galvanized. For mixed projects, mark the surface type per area on the layout drawing so pricing and fabrication match each zone. Unsure which areas need serration? Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Selecting a surface without reviewing contaminants, slope, footwear, maintenance and the project slip-resistance requirement
- Paying the serrated premium across an entire plant when only circulation routes and stairs need it
- Assuming serration increases load capacity — it does not; capacity is confirmed from bar size, spacing and span
- Not marking surface types per area on mixed orders, so fabrication guesses which zone gets which
